“Fear not” is a common command that we read from God’s word, the Bible.
- “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deut. 31:6
- So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10
- Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Luke 12:6-7
Let’s face it; we are a scared people. It really doesn’t take much to rattle us. Sometimes it can be an unexpected event like a car crash or a prognosis from a doctor, other times we don’t even need an event. We are scared just “imagining” what could happen. So why are we walking around in fear? It all comes down to belief.
For instance, if you believe that the sandwich you bought at the deli is made with clean hands and good fixings, chances are you don’t have to work up courage to take your first bite. If you believe that your bed is bug free and sturdy enough to support you throughout the night, you won’t even lose sleep (sorry I couldn’t resist) thinking about your bed all night.
But for some reason we have plenty of other fears that keep us on edge and even incapacitate us. Life can be scary. We have seen bad things happen to other people in the past, and we’ve all had bad things happen to us. But what we forget is how God used it in our lives for our good, and His glory. God doesn’t cause the bad, that’s called living in a broken world, but he does make promises as seen in the previous verses as to why you should take comfort and not fear:
- “for the Lord your God goes with you;
- He will never leave you nor forsake you.
- for I am with you;
- I will strengthen you and help you;
- I will uphold you with my righteous right hand
- The very hairs of your head are all numbered.
- You are worth more than many sparrows.
These verses show us that we don’t go through life’s trials alone. We have promises that an all-powerful, all-knowing God goes with us, making us brave as we rely on Him.
